This was not your every-day school bus — it was a sleeper bus. Everyone got a small sleeping area, stacked two tall on each side. To keep the ‘beds’ clean, you also took your shoes off to get on the bus. Except I had no shoes to remove. After some annoyed gestures (from the driver) met apologetic gestures (from me), eventually I was thrown a towel to clean my feet and let on the bus. On the bus I was able to relax until the Laos/Vietnam border. This wasn’t a particularly hard crossing: get off the bus, let security check you visa, stamp your passport, and scan your bag. The only interesting part is that I was doing it barefoot. Luckily, no one seemed to notice, but it felt a bit odd in a dry official government office bare foot and walking across county borders barefoot. (More difficult borders include the Cambodia/Laos border where my last crossing required 6 different bribes.) I changed busses in Vinh no problem and when we reached Hanoi it was about 3 am. Check in to the hotel was 2 pm and I didn’t want to pay for another night — besides, I was resting on the bus and only had one day in Hanoi before leaving for the States and wanted to explore some. Small tributaries created a dense labyrinth of rivers. Along these rivers were narrow paths, similar to American sidewalks, flanked by houses. No cars could pass in this area, the paths were just wide enough for motorbikes to drive on. Access to these houses was limited to motorbike and boat; vehicles most households had multiple of. Each die has an animal on it. Money is placed on the board animals and the string is pulled to release the die. If the animal you put money on was shown your money is doubled. If it is rolled twice, your money is tripled. If not at all you lose your money. You could also bet on the smaller squares. These required both animals to be shown but had a larger payout. There was another version with numbered dice but the animal one was more popular. There were many Thai people here, so I guess it is more illegal to gamble in Thailand than it is to cross the border to Burma and gamble there. Notice there is a substance many people are wearing on their faces - this is not mud its Thanaka. Manila had very friendly cats, my only note is that they did a somewhat poor job of controlling the rats. Manila also had quite friendly stray dogs. Singapore’s cats are very self-important. Singapore is a small island with lots of people and, comparatively, not that much to do. So some people spend hours a day feeding cats, others write books about the cats in their community, and upon the demise of a cat, many people leave flowers and offerings. It is very sweet that the cats get this much attention, but it leads the cats to think that they are absolute royalty and generally a class above me. My two local void cats would tolerate me petting them but would walk away after about 30 seconds of my attention.
